Presentation
Jasper is a variety of Chalcedony, closely related to Heliotrope and Agates.
Its name comes from the Greek and Latin iaspis, meaning “spotted stone”. In various traditions, Jasper symbolises peace, wisdom and serenity. It is associated with grounding and empathy, particularly during stressful periods. Its symbolism evokes gradual, gentle and steady change.
Legends
Known to the Egyptians, Greeks and Romans, Jasper was used to make jewellery, amulets, seals, engravings and mosaics, as well as imposing objects such as vases and pillars.
The ancient Egyptians associated Jasper with the blood of their goddess Isis.
In the Middle Ages, it was believed to ward off evil spirits and help keep secrets. Some beliefs also attributed to it a protective role against snake and spider bites. In the 4th century, it was thought to have the power to bring rain.
In Norse legends, the hilt of Siegfried's sword, the dragon slayer, was said to be set with red Jasper, a symbol of courage in the face of the great dragon.
At psychological level
Jasper symbolises the determination needed to see projects through. It evokes the ability to face difficulties, stay grounded and develop self-confidence.
At mental level
Jasper is associated with reflection, organisation and the realisation of projects. It symbolises turning ideas into action and the determination to move forward.
At energy level
In energy-based traditions, Jasper is associated with chakra alignment. Depending on its colour, it may be symbolically linked to any of the seven main chakras.
It also represents symbolic protection and the transformation of influences perceived as negative. Some traditions associate it with harmonising the energies of a place and finding serenity in a technological environment.
At spiritual level
Jasper symbolically accompanies inner journeys and self-exploration. It is also associated with dream recall and the harmonisation of the subtle bodies with spiritual worlds.
At physical level
In lithotherapy traditions, Jasper is associated with vitality and endurance, particularly during difficult periods. Some traditions also link it symbolically with blood circulation, the sexual organs and sensuality.
Maintenance
You can cleanse Jasper by rinsing it under running water for a few minutes, provided its variety and condition make this suitable. Avoid salt water if you are unsure how resistant it is.
For symbolic recharging, you can place it in daylight for a few hours, on an Amethyst or Quartz geode, or on a Flower of Life symbol.
Synthesis
Jasper symbolises unity, serenity and grounding. Associated with chakra alignment, it evokes symbolic spiritual protection and a more harmonious relationship with one's environment.
