Presentation
Obsidian is a volcanic rock formed when lava cools so rapidly that it has no time to crystallise. Known as the “stone of truth”, it is said to bring to light what lies beneath appearances. Its use dates back to ancient times: its hardness and exceptionally sharp edges made it a valuable material for crafting weapons and tools. Some pieces of obsidian were also polished and used as mirrors.
Legends
Because of its sharpness and dark, reflective appearance, obsidian was associated with the power to pierce darkness and reveal the truth. The Maya polished the stone to create mirrors used in divinatory practices, including those intended to seek answers about the future. In Mexican culture, it was called Itzli, a name associated with stone and its symbolic power.
At psychological level
In lithotherapy traditions, obsidian is regarded as a protective stone when facing obstacles and negative influences. It is also associated with developing interpersonal relationships and protection against psychic attacks.
Known for its revealing qualities, it encourages self-knowledge by bringing the darker aspects of our personality into view. It supports introspection and the integration of these different facets of ourselves. It is also associated with releasing emotional blockages and exploring inherited wounds, as part of a journey towards greater clarity, inner strength and compassion.
At mental level
As a stone of truth, obsidian is said to help uncover the root of problems and untangle complex situations. In energy practices, it is associated with easing mental tension and seeking clarity.
It also encourages us to identify sources of stress and face the difficulties that need to be addressed. Its reputation as a protective stone makes it an ally for those seeking distance from negativity and a clearer perspective on situations.
At energy level
Obsidian is traditionally used for protection against unwanted energetic influences, particularly those associated with places and the environment. It is said to absorb geopathic stress and negative energies, while supporting energetic cleansing after spiritual work. It is also associated with releasing energetic blockages.
At spiritual level
A stone of deep introspection, obsidian is said to encourage awareness of buried issues and truths that may be difficult to accept. Its work is described as intense; spiritual practices therefore recommend approaching it with discernment and seeking support if this process brings difficult emotions to the surface.
Obsidian is also associated with soul healing and the exploration of past lives. In some spiritual approaches, it accompanies work on past experiences and traumas believed to be connected with these memories.
Maintenance
In lithotherapy practices, obsidian is regarded as a stone that absorbs negative energies, so it is commonly cleansed after use. You can place it in spring water for a few hours if the stone and its finish are suitable, or choose a water-free method.
To recharge it according to common practices, you can leave it in sunlight for a few hours, place it on an amethyst or quartz geode, or set it on a Flower of Life symbol.
Synthesis
A stone of truth and protection, obsidian accompanies introspection and the exploration of the different facets of the self. Associated with inner strength and clarity, it is said to support periods of transformation, help create distance from mental stress and encourage energetic cleansing.
