Presentation
Amethyst is traditionally regarded as a spiritual stone. It has featured in countless royal jewels, from ancient Egypt to the British monarchies. Its name comes from the Greek amethystos, meaning “sober”, reflecting the belief that it could prevent its wearer from becoming intoxicated.
Legends
Amethyst was believed to bring unusual and perplexing dreams to its wearer. During the Middle Ages, it was thought to act as an antidote to poison. It was also used as a charm against witchcraft.
Leonardo da Vinci is said to have attributed to it the ability to stimulate intelligence and dispel negative thoughts.
At psychological level
Amethyst is traditionally associated with remembering and interpreting dreams. It evokes finding calm amid stress, anger, fear and worry. It invites us to gain perspective on sadness, accept loss and take a broader view of difficult events. It is also associated with exploring personal blockages and navigating dependency.
At mental level
Associated with calm and concentration, Amethyst evokes inspiration and creativity. It is therefore valued in artistic practices and creative pursuits. It is also linked with memory and decision-making, drawing on common sense and intuition.
At energy level
In energy-based traditions, Amethyst symbolises the transformation of lower energies into energies of higher vibration. It represents the connection between the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual dimensions. It is also associated with the symbolic cleansing of the aura and with the throat and crown chakras.
At spiritual level
A stone of awareness and wisdom, Amethyst is associated with meditation and the exploration of higher states of consciousness. It evokes a deepening of spiritual awareness, selflessness and wisdom. When placed on the third eye in certain practices, it symbolises its awakening. It is also associated with opening channels of communication, spiritual protection and a sense of justice.
At physical level
In lithotherapy traditions, Amethyst is associated with purification and bodily balance. Some traditions also link it with the organs involved in elimination processes and with the immune system. It is sometimes associated with physical comfort, tension and headaches.
Maintenance
You can cleanse Amethyst by rinsing it under running water for a few minutes, provided the stone and its condition are suitable. Avoid salt.
Do not expose it to direct sunlight, as its colour may fade. For symbolic recharging, moonlight or a Flower of Life symbol is preferable.
Synthesis
Traditionally associated with protection and spiritual guidance, Amethyst evokes intuition, inspiration and reflection. It symbolically accompanies decision-making and spiritual cleansing practices, whether for personal use or ritual objects.
